5 Fire effects in Photoshop

I have create a series of fire effect tutorials for Photoshop, you should be able to use them for most fire types.

The first of the series is simple flame, these are calm controlled fire that are often seen in man made fire sources such as match/lighters or stove fire.

The second in the series is a larger type of fire, its the type of fire that can be seen before it gets out of controlled.

The third in the series is a wild fire effect often seen in forest fire or burning car with dark smoke.

The forth type is an explosion, its a smaller explosion, you probably wont see the shock wave in real life, but I added it anyway for the effects so it is up to you.

Hi. Awesome tutorials, but i have one problem… Maybe you can help? I’m trying to make the explosion effect with shock wave. But when i’m trying to make the shock wave then i get stuck…
I make a new transparent layer (like you do) and then i make a white circle, then i CTRL-Click one of the fire layers, but when it says “ctrl click one of the fire layer and select the alpha chanel” then im lost… I can’t find any alpha channel, i’ve tried to create my own, but that just makes the whole picture red (with different types of red) if i select the all the channels, including the alpha channel. And if i select the alpha channel only then the picture becomes completely black… Something you can help me fix? Please. :)

*You’re welcome to send me an e-mail*

  • to answer your first question, I think you are on the wrong color space, go to image-mode-rgb, if that still wont work, than ask me again.

the second question, when your photo turn red than you are on the right track, photoshop is using red to represent the alpha channel, if you press “q” it will go back, q again it turns red.

Can you slow down the videos? It’s nearly impossible for me to see what you’re doing. Or can you write out the directions? Specifically the 3rd video with the wild fire effects. Thanks!

    Hi, very nice tutorials.
I’ve learned how to create tons of effects from those videos. I just wonder which program you used to record the videos? Because when I try to record some videos they always gets messy. :S

Hi. These videos are awesome. Really great.
    >>To answer Christians question: I suggest you use Camtasia Studio 5, it’s a really great and easy-to-use program.<<

    Now to my own question:

Which program do you use to add the text to your videos? I would really appreciate if you could tell me. :)
    Thanks!

For the second effect, the bigger flame, I’m confused about the instructions halfway through.
For example, you said to create a layer and fill it with white. Judging from the screen the white layer is on top of the black layer, but somehow the black layer is showing?
Also, when I try to apply an inner and outer glow on the Layer Style Panel, the effects do not appear on the flame, but on the edge of the layer.
    Help?
