Fire text effect using quick mask and distort filters in photoshopHere is an example on how to combine QUICK MASK and filters to create special effects for you. In Quick Mask, Photoshop’s represents your selection with the color Red and Clear. It allows you to paint in your selection instead of using the traditional marquee tool or magic wand. Everything you paint in black will appear red, and everything that you paint white or erase with the eraser tool will turn white, anything in between will become partially selected. So a %50 gray brush will translate to %50 opacity and so on. You can use any tool to edit quick mask including filters.

- First create the text you want the burning effect on.

- Create a copy of the text and flip it 90 degrees by going to EDIT – TRANSFORM – ROTATE 90 DEGREE CCW

- Now create the streaks on top of the text by going to FILTER – STYLIZED – WIND, it will ask you if you want to rasterizing the text, click yes. Rasterizing will turn the text information into pixel.

- Select BLAST and FROM THE RIGHT.

- Ctrl click this layer and Photoshop automatically select the boundary/shape of this layer.

- I’ve turned off all the lanyers so you can see the selection clearly.

- Go into Quick Mask mode by using the short cut “Q” or the icon right below the colors chooser on your tool box. It looks like a square with a circle inside.

- Everything that was selected now becomes black and everything that was now is filled with red. As long as you are in Quick Mask mode, everything painted black will become your selection when you turn off Quick Mask mode. You can experiment painting with brush and hit Q again to turn off Quick Mask mode to see the result.

- You can also use filters to manipulate the selection. (At least one visible layer has to be selected for this to work, so either click on the background layer or create a new layer)

- Go to FILTER – DISTORT – WAVE,

- I use 1 for number of generation,

- 1, 60 for wavelength

- 6, 52 for amplitude

- 100, 100 for scale

- DISTORTION – 10

- SMOOTHNESS – 12

- BLOCKS

- SCALING – 168

- Hit ok, nd you will have a more fire like texture.

- When you switch back to regular mode by pressing Q again, all the black area will be selected.

- Create a new layer and choose EDIT – FILL, and fill it with white color.
