Hey Hoof
Thank you for your thoughtful comment, I agree with you that Magic Wand is NOT the best tool to use in the world but it is still worth looking at for some quick manipulation. I personally use it all the time for minor things when I am lazy but for more important works I rarely touch the magic wand tool.

I actually expected this post to only contain the words 'DON'T!'. I really feel the magic wand tool should have been pulled some version ago. The quick selection tool does a much better job in most of the mentioned cases, while selecting color range and manipulating chanels are the secrets of the trade most professional users hold. I can spot most of magic wand tools selected selections from a large distance.
And the Quick Mask is a often overlooked selection tool as well, that opens doors to use all different methods of selection while working on one selection (actually it is an alpha channel).

It is really worth looking into other ways of making selections. And I think the real magic lies in layers, masks and alpha channels. With fairly little magic involved, but far better results.

The tips above still hold up when using all other methods of selection. So it is still worth the read and to learn from!
